Our History

Adrienne & The Misses Bonney St Ives was established at St Ives Shopping Village in 1981, but the legend behind “The Misses Bonney” can be traced to 1906.

Legend has it that in 1906 Nerissa Bonney opened a babywear shop called The Lavender Room in Cremorne.  The completion of the Sydney Harbour Bridge changed the face of Sydney and in 1934 The Lavender Room relocates to the St James Building on Elizabeth St, next to David Jones.

In 1942 The Lavender Room moved downstairs to street frontage on Elizabeth Street and customers of the current Adrienne & The Misses Bonney St Ives recall being taken into see Miss Bonney to have their seasonal outfits made. “A very elderly gentleman called into the store one day and asked if Miss Bonney is still the owner.” says Jennifer Berry, Creative Director.  “I told him that I believed it has been a long time since Miss Bonney owned the business, and he proceeded to tell me how his mother would take him into Miss Bonney to have his winter coat made each year, into the St James building where eventually, as an adult, he would work in offices in the building.”

In 1946 Miss Ena Tanner takes over the business and renames it “The Misses Bonney” and moves “The Misses Bonney” into the State Shopping Block, continuing the tradition of beautiful hand made baby and children’s wear, toys and ladies lingerie and gifts.

After World War II, retail was an exciting, creative, thriving area in Sydney. Inspired by migrants from Europe, the fashion worn by the American soldiers and our boys returning from the war, Sydney was a world of independent retailers, like The Misses Bonney.

Bespoke tailors, milliners, jewellers and European fashion could be found in Rowe St, the State Shopping Block, the Strand Arcade and many more arcades and streets in the city.

A day out in the city at a department store called for Sunday best.  Department stores were elegant, opulent, evolving with the introduction of the moving footway or escalator and elavators.  David Jones, Mark Foys, Anthony Hordern & Sons, Grace Bros, Gowings just to name a few.

Today Adrienne & The Misses Bonney St Ives maintains the tradition of handmade, special exclusive baby, toddler and giftwear, from a hand-embroidered matinee jacket to a hand-knitted receiving shawl and our classic cosmetic sachets.

However moving with the times, the brides that may have visited us 30 years ago, or more, for their trousseau, will visit us today for their travel wardrobe, as well as shopping for their grandchildren.

Today, we are a mini-emporium.  For our babies and toddlers we stock exclusive, local and international labels, our own label for special occasion and Christening gowns and of course, our Australian, handmade babywear, shawls and blankets.

For women, we offer relaxed, contemporary women’s fashion, specialising in travel wardrobes, whether you are taking the trip of a lifetime, or just traveling through your day.  We also specialise in fuller fittings, stocking up to size 22 (Australian size) where possible.

If you are shopping on-line with us or need a corporate gift delivered, delivery is free within Australia - our service to you. Please enjoy browsing Adrienne & The Misses Bonney St Ives on-line and if you or a family member recalls shopping with the original Miss Bonney prior to the 1970’s we would love to hear your story at shop@themissesbonneystives.com.au.
